2016 WPA Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the Wadleigh Pond Association Meeting for June 11, 2016

The annual meeting of the Wadleigh Pond Association was held on June 11, 2016 at the home of Dave and Jeanne Dulong. The meeting was called to order by President Laurie Chapman. There were 26 members in attendance.

The minutes of the last meeting on June 15, 2015 were read and a motion was made and seconded to accept them. A vote was taken and the minutes were accepted.

The Treasurers report was given. The bank balance as of June 10, 2016 was $8,057.74. The expenses from June 10, 2015 to June 10, 2016 totaled $451.60. They included:

Picnic expenses:            $252.00

Signs for spillway:           100.00

Postage:                              28.60

Corp. Registration             35.00

50/50 Tickets                     36.00

The profit from the 2015 picnic was $1460.00. Many thanks to Joe and Denice Morais who hosted the event and to all that helped and participated.

Under Old Business, Melissa Pink gave the results of the canvassing of the aquatic plants that she did on the pond last summer with help from Arthur Dupuis, Jeanne Dulong, and a state specialist, Laurie Callahan . After a lot of time spent and hard work done collecting many samples, the aquatic plants were classified as “native species” and the water quality/clarity was judged to be “acceptable”.  We thank Melissa and “company” for all their work.

Also under Old Business a discussion was held about ways to provide information about “Water Safety and Boating”. Comments were made to remind large boats and boats towing skiers to be aware of swimmers and smaller craft that may also be out on the water, with an acknowledgment that all boaters should maintain a safe distance from others.  Again it was pointed out that there is a “no wake zone” which means a slow speed going down the “channel”, through narrow passages around islands and within 200’ from shore. If you would like to receive an official copy of the Maine Boating Laws and Rules by mail, send your request by e-mail online to Maine.Gov or call (207) 287-8000.

Under New Business, Rollie Nadeau was present to explain his project going forward on the Chappell Shores Road from Michaela Drive to the Mast Road. He will be paving that portion of the road. The culverts put in the spillway by the WPA are in a narrow part of the road that is involved.  He has asked for the association to appropriate up to $1200.00 for an additional culvert that he will cut and use to extend the existing culverts so that that part of the road can be widened. There has been some erosion of gravel and the rocks placed to stabilize the culverts and this will be a help for that. He will order the culvert and if the location of the culvert is near enough, he will even pick it up, saving any delivery costs. The association will pay for the culvert, sales tax and delivery charges if delivery charges are necessary. An additional piece of culvert will also be added to extend an existing culvert on the other side of the road just down from this site, but there was much discussion that since this is a smaller section of culvert that is needed it could be found without buying an additional culvert. It was felt that even though this culvert has not been needed recently, it might come in handy if the dam is in an “overtopping situation” from severe weather in the future.

Also under new business, Linda Houy explained the new 50/50 Raffle to be held at the annual WPA picnic. Tickets in books of 6 for $5 will be available for sale from now until and including the day of the picnic.

Lyn Lord explained the calendars she is preparing for sale as a “fund raiser”. Photos of Wadleigh Pond pets, animals and local wildlife will be featured on calendars that will be available to order at the annual picnic. She is still accepting contributed photos to be used. If you want to submit a photo, Lyns’ email address is: [email protected].  One calendar will be featured on the Raffle Table at the annual picnic. Tickets will be available to win it and anyone wanting to order calendars can do so at this time. The cost will be $15.00 and dated to start on January 2017. Thanks to Lyn for all her work on this project.

Also on the agenda was discussion of the Annual Picnic. Sharyn King offered to have the picnic at her home at 24 Sullivan Lane. The date will be August 20, and will began at 12 noon, after the Boat Parade at 11 am. As usual, boats can gather on Roberts Pond. They may be decorated or not, all are welcome to participate. The picnic admission price is still $5 for adults and $2 for children under 12.  All are welcome (even if you have company, it was mentioned $5 was a great price to feed company).  BYOB, a dish to share and chairs. A donation to the Raffle Table is appreciated, but not required. Also any help for the setup, beginning at 10 am is needed and would be very appreciated.

The last item of business was the election of Officers for the 2016-2017 season. Linda Houy was elected President. Eileen Kelly, Jeanne Dulong and Sharyn King will remain as Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn. A vote was taken and the motion passed. The meeting was adjourned.

The minutes respectfully compiled and submitted by Sharyn King, Secretary.
